About:

Somnath temple located on the western coast in Prabhas Patan near Veraval in Saurashtra state of Gujarat, India. One of the holiest,sacred and important pilgrimage  it is the first among the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines of Shiva.


The word somnath literally means the protector of moon god.


The jyotirlingas are taken as the supreme, undivided reality out of which Shiva partly appears.


Somnath literally means the Protector of Moon God. Jyotirlinga means Lingam of light.


History


The Indian mythology is full of stories, one of them being that the Moon worshipped Lord Shiva here and got relieved from the curse of his father-in-law Daksha Prajapati. Hence the jyotirlinga is known as Somnath (Soma means Moon).


Temple of Somnath Mahadev is situated on the coast of Arabian Sea in Veraval Gujarat. It is believed that the main temple was built in 4 phases:


Gold by Lord Soma (Moon)


Silver by Ravi,


Wood by lord Krishna


Stone by King Bhimadeva.


Festivals:


Chanting of Mahamritunjay mantra at this Jyotirlinga gives miraculous results. This place is also famous for the mythological importance lord Krishna left his body at this place. Worshipping lord Shiva in Shravan month yields great results.


A grand fair, Somanth Mahadev Fair or Kartik Purnima Mela, is held in the month of Novemeber on the occassion of the birthday of the elder son of Lord Shiva Kartikeya. This day is celebrated on a grand scale and attracts a huge number of dedicated devotees every year.
