Rudraksha, the seed of a very special tree, usually grows in the Himalayas and only at certain altitudes. These beads are said to have an incredibly unique vibration. It is traditionally believed that the number of beads on the mala is one hundred and eight plus one. That one extra bead is called the bindu. The Rudraksha mala is most commonly used for chanting or reciting the mantra of Lord shiva or any god as pleased. It is believed that the gods are easily appeased when their mantras are chanted or recited with a Rudraksha mala with 108 beads. It is also said that Rudraksha mala 12 mm washes away all our sins or bad karma from both our past and present lives. The number one hundred and eight is considered to have a cosmic significance and that is why the number of beads on the mala are mostly 108.
