Vastu Shastra: Introduction

Vastu Shastra originated in India thousands of years ago. It can be translated as the “science of architecture” and is an ancient Indian science of building a suitable structure. Vastu Shastra combines science, astronomy, astrology and art to make our lives peaceful and secure.

Vastu Shastra is the textual part of Vastu Vidya. Vastu Vidya includes knowledge and ideas, sometimes with the support of layout diagrams. These ideas and concepts are models for the organization of space within a building or a collection of buildings. These ideas are intended to integrate architecture with nature. The principles of science laid down in the ancient days were based on the effect of sunrays during different times of the day. The observations that were made were noted down and corrected, to achieve accuracy.

Ancient Vastu Shastra includes suggestions for the layout of temples, houses, towns, cities, gardens, roads, water works, shops and other public areas.  Sages of ancient India have used all the five elements of creation in this universe for the science of construction of structures. They are Earth, Water, Air, Fire and Space.

Thus, Vastu Shastra is a very important science in India.
